接下來介紹prefer的用法！

prefer

句型一：Someone prefer A.

表達比較喜歡的簡單句子，在上下文中有比較含意的時候就可以直接使用，後接名詞或動名詞。

In the morning, I prefer coffee. 早上我比較喜歡咖啡。

Actually, I prefer having afternoon tea. 事實上我比較喜歡喝下午茶。

句型二：Someone prefer A to/over B.

明確比較兩種事物。A、B可為名詞或動名詞。

In the morning, I prefer coffee to tea. 早上我比較喜歡咖啡勝過茶。

As for leisure activities, Tom prefers watching movies over reading books. 談到休閒活動，Tom比較喜歡看電影勝過看書。

句型三：Someone prefer to A rather than B.= Someone would rather A than B.

某人喜歡做某事勝過另一件；雖然都有比較的意思，但 would rather… than 的句型口氣更接近「寧願做某事也不要做另一件」。A和B都為原型動詞。

Ruby prefers to go shopping rather than play online games. =Ruby would rather go shopping than play online games. Ruby喜歡去逛街勝過玩線上遊戲。

句型四：Someone prefer that somebody (should) A.

prefer 加上 that 子句時，用法和 suggest、demand 等很相似，should 可以省略因此A為原型動詞。

Fiona prefers John take off his shoes before going into her room. Fiona希望John在進她的房間前先脫鞋。

When it comes to music, everyone has their own preferences. 說到音樂，每個人都會有自己的偏好。

Teenagers show a growing preference for Korean pop music. 青少年越來越喜歡韓國流行音樂。

rather

句型一：rather than

比較兩件事的優劣順序，放在 rather than「前面」的項目是比較偏好的那個。

In my opinion, it’s important to preserve historical sites rather than (to) build new buildings. 我的意見是，保存古蹟比蓋新建築物重要。

句型二：would rather

寧可做某事，後加原型動詞。

I would rather stay home on such a cold day. 這麼冷的天氣我寧可待在家裡。

補充用法：rather當副詞

rather當副詞時有以下兩個用法

1. 相當地；某種程度上的

John, who used to be rather aggressive and irritable, has changed after dating Gina. 原本相當暴躁易怒的John在開始跟Gina約會後改變不少。

2. 更精確的

I walked, or rather limped, the two kilometers home. 我走了兩公里，更精確的說是一跛一跛的回家。
